Remember that quiet girl, picked on, the one left out of everything? This acoustic throwback to the heyday of Woman with Guitar Power, tells the story of Jessica. The teacher introduced her, in the first grade, as a mouse because she was so timid and shy. The name stuck but it also became Jessica's inspiration. Here's all that, set to a catchy, upbeat, arrangement that throws in a few cool surprises.

Jessica Mouse
By Colette O’Connor 3/17/17
Jessica, she was afraid
On the first day of school she had nothing
to say. Shy and alarmed
She hung out with the jackets
Not to be a distraction, It felt safe and warm.
Jessica mouse, Jessica mouse
There’s nothing more you can do.
Worrying how Jessica mouse
Is never the hero; Just a marshmallow
With nothing to say is Jessica mouse
Timid and shy she would stay
Holding the answers inside everyday
The teacher was mean
She would point to the corner
And say to the class "This is Jessica mouse."
"Jessica mouse"
Jessica mouse; Just like a mouse
There’s nothing more we can do
Worrying how, Jessica mouse
Is never the hero; Just a marshmallow
With nothing to say Is Jessica mouse.
She never pushed for a swing
And was told by her teacher
"You can’t even sing" (oh boy)
Something inside her wanted
To find that closet door
But rules aren’t to be broken
Or you’re not a good kid- any - more.
(instrumental)
Helpless is something learned!
Powerless must be taught!
Helpless is something learned!
Powerless must be taught!
Then came another
the teacher made sit in that
corner spot.
Oh now, and that was how Jessica Mouse
got tired of being afraid
Courageous now, our Jessica Mouse
Had read how the elephants-So big and alarming
Were terrified silly by one little mouse.
Our hero, from tyranny saved
by standing her ground for justice
that day, hey-ay!
Jessica Mouse, now Jessica Mouse
has a tattoo on her arm
that pictures a mouse, so mighty and proud
that says underneath
"This is Jessica Mouse"
Jessica Mouse.
Our Jessica Mouse
Jessica Mouse.
